NYS Common Core Learning Standards – Parent Resource Page and the Home/School Connection

In addition to what a student is taught in school, a critical component of a child’s success is what they are taught at home.  Below are several tools that can provide the Manhasset community with a full understanding the Common Core and what it means for our students and teachers.  We encourage parents and families to use these resources in conjunction with any information you receive from your child’s school and/or teacher(s).

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are important because they help all students learn using the same high expectations–no matter who they are or where they go to school.  They help create very clear goals for what your child should know and be able to do in English language arts, mathematics, and other content areas.  If you know what the expectations are, you can work with the teacher and help your child prepare to become college and career ready.

It is also important to understand that the Common Core State Standards are not a curriculum.  People sometimes assume, mistakenly, that the Common Core Standards dictate the skills and concepts students are required to learn in their classrooms; they do not.  School districts and teachers still make the decisions regarding what curriculum is implemented to meet the expectations of the Common Core.

We hope you find this site helpful.
